Growing up, my dad and I were always tinkering on things. I took this love of knowing how things work and got my undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering. When I graduated, I moved to southeast Kansas and bought my first home. This home was beautiful and had everything I wanted, which isn’t easy since I asked my realtor for “trees and hills” in southeast Kansas.
While this house had my big ticket items, what it lacked was a guest bathroom that made any sense at all. The walls were lime green, painted tile, with sky blue drywall above them. There was no shower, only a bathtub, and I couldn’t imagine my retired parents using *that* when they came to visit. That doesn’t even mention the window, the only source of ventilation for the room, located directly above the bathtub. This room was a disaster.
It didn’t take long after moving in before I called my dad up to talk through what I wanted it to look like. My dad had carefully thought out plans, ways to make this room absolutely beautiful. What did I have? Impatience and a free weekend! I figured I could get a shower installed at least in a weekend…and boy was I squarely wrong. Each step of the remodel process and I hit roadblock after roadblock. Mold, unstable floor supports, leaking toilets, shoddy wiring… Over one year later and that bathroom was beautiful, safe, and functional, and I found a love for DIY and remodeling!
